About the Work

I have been working weekly through my Journal de Bord series for several years—an ongoing practice rooted in real-time observation, much like a captain's log. This approach is inspired by the Japanese shichijni ko calendar, where each micro-season lasts only a few days. Nature is constantly changing, and I strive to capture those fleeting moments before they vanish.

This piece is part of my Journal de Bord series, shared with my catalogue subscribers each week. In this entry, I reflect on what I observed in nature, how the piece unfolded, and the specific moment that inspired the work. Below is the journal entry to go alongside this artwork.

Entrée n°30

Winter reveals the hazel in its most elemental form. With no leaves, buds, or catkins to distract the eye, the structure of the canopy becomes the subject: a network of lines, crossings, and quiet tensions. The sparseness allows each branch to be seen for its character — some arching gracefully, others twisting or reaching abruptly into space.

In painting this work, I focused on conveying that intricate lattice and the stillness of dormancy. The absence of foliage creates a calm, pared-back composition, where negative space plays as vital a role as the branches themselves. The result is a portrait of hazel at rest — a moment of pause within the seasonal cycle, holding its energy in reserve for the spring to come.
