About the Work

Back in June 2022, I was at my trusted paper supplier in London, a space stacked floor-to-ceiling with the finest papers from around the world. Alongside my usual Japanese and Italian papers, I came across something truly special: a small stack of vintage handmade watercolour paper. For me, this is the truffle of the paper world rare, full of character, and steeped in history.

I had managed to acquire a precious collection of Hayle Mill paper, handmade from cotton rag with a cold-pressed surface. This off-white, gently textured paper is no longer in production—Hayle Mill, once one of Britain’s most esteemed paper mills, closed its doors for good in 1987. Founded in Kent in 1815, Hayle Mill served generations of artists including J.M.W. Turner. The Green family, who ran the mill for over a century, helped preserve the traditional craft of papermaking well into the modern age. Today, what remains of Hayle Mill’s legacy is limited to the final surviving sheets, making each one a relic of artistic heritage.

These particular papers came from the Brixton studio of the late Leonard McComb RA (1930–2018), a revered Royal Academician and former Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools. His work resides in the collections of the British Museum, Tate Britain, and the V&A. To hold and use the same paper he once chose for his own work feels like a quiet honour, a small dialogue between artists across time.

With this rare Hayle Mill paper, I wanted to return to a more elemental approach—simple botanical drawings in graphite. No ink, no colour, just the directness of mark-making that allows the paper’s texture and tone to breathe.

As I return to this slow, deliberate process, I’m reminded of Leonard McComb’s words:

“If one person smiles when they see my work it is enough, my life has had a meaning and a shape.”
