About the Work

I have been working weekly through my Journal de Bord series for several years—an ongoing practice rooted in real-time observation, much like a captain's log. This approach is inspired by the Japanese shichijni ko calendar, where each micro-season lasts only a few days. Nature is constantly changing, and I strive to capture those fleeting moments before they vanish.

This piece is part of my Journal de Bord series, shared with my catalogue subscribers each week. In this entry, I reflect on what I observed in nature, how the piece unfolded, and the specific moment that inspired the work. Below is the journal entry to go alongside this artwork.

Entrée n°54

This black walnut stands on one of the busiest roads in Bath, London Road, and I pass it regularly on my way out of town. Every autumn it glows a vivid yellow, bright even against the greyest sky.

As I was driving out to collect the framed works mentioned in this email, I found myself thinking: I must paint that tree this week. I wanted to continue exploring autumn in monochrome, and this felt like the perfect subject — its leaves clearly defined in tones of yellow and green.

Alongside the scroll pieces I collected from the framers, I also picked up Beech Shadows, a large work measuring 126 × 90 cm, which carries a strong presence. While wrapping the piece, we turned it on its side so the format became portrait. In that moment, I could clearly imagine how I might paint the black walnut’s branches, flowing downward through the panels.
