About the Work

I have been working weekly through my Journal de Bord series for several years—an ongoing practice rooted in real-time observation, much like a captain's log. This approach is inspired by the Japanese shichijni ko calendar, where each micro-season lasts only a few days. Nature is constantly changing, and I strive to capture those fleeting moments before they vanish.

This piece is part of my Journal de Bord series, shared with my catalogue subscribers each week. In this entry, I reflect on what I observed in nature, how the piece unfolded, and the specific moment that inspired the work. Below is the journal entry to go alongside this artwork.

Entrée n°20

Due to the prolonged heat and drought, trees across the UK have begun shedding their leaves prematurely to conserve water and energy, creating what feels like a “false autumn.” Everywhere I look, there is a hazy mix of green and orange. I collected hazel to paint, as it perfectly captures this moment in time — its leaves singed at the edges, its canopy punctuated by unexpected gaps.

I have painted hazel many times before, but I have never seen it appear so spindly and sparse. The lack of water has stunted the growth of its branches, leaving them thinner and less full than usual. In this piece, I focused on the tiniest शाखes — those holding the promise of new growth. I worked delicately, using only the tip of my brush to suggest these fragile, emerging shoots on the page.
