About the Work

I have been working weekly through my Journal de Bord series for several years—an ongoing practice rooted in real-time observation, much like a captain's log. This approach is inspired by the Japanese shichijni ko calendar, where each micro-season lasts only a few days. Nature is constantly changing, and I strive to capture those fleeting moments before they vanish.

This piece is part of my Journal de Bord series, shared with my catalogue subscribers each week. In this entry, I reflect on what I observed in nature, how the piece unfolded, and the specific moment that inspired the work. Below is the journal entry to go alongside this artwork.

Entrée n° 102

I don’t think a spring has passed without me making a piece on hawthorn or blackthorn. For me, they mark the true beginning of the season—so abundant where I live, lining the hedgerows and lighting up the lanes with blossom and that first vivid green.

I learnt on a tree identification course that you can tell them apart by a simple rule: blackthorn flowers before it leafs, and hawthorn leafs before it flowers. It’s what gives the impression that the hedgerows are in bloom for weeks on end.

This year, I’ve managed to catch both in transition. On the hawthorn, tiny buds are just beginning to form, ready to open; on the blackthorn, the leaves are only just pushing through the blossom.

Both pieces are drawn in graphite, as I wanted to hold onto the delicacy of those small details—things that might be lost in my usual sumi ink. Each plant has such a strong, structural framework of branches, all linear and defined, softened now by the arrival of blossom and leaf. The blackthorn, in particular, lent itself to a longer scroll format; I was so drawn to its angular shapes, I could have kept drawing it on and on.
