About the Work

I have been working weekly through my Journal de Bord series for several years—an ongoing practice rooted in real-time observation, much like a captain's log. This approach is inspired by the Japanese shichijni ko calendar, where each micro-season lasts only a few days. Nature is constantly changing, and I strive to capture those fleeting moments before they vanish.

This piece is part of my Journal de Bord series, shared with my catalogue subscribers each week. In this entry, I reflect on what I observed in nature, how the piece unfolded, and the specific moment that inspired the work. Below is the journal entry to go alongside this artwork.

Entrée n°17

The artwork above is the first in my series of charred works exploring the geology of the UK and the abstract patterns these materials create. It features Cotswold stones arranged on wood and then charred, producing an organic and unexpected effect. Each piece is created with extreme patience, as I “paint” with fire, carefully capturing every intricate detail around the stones. The stones themselves were selected for several reasons: they do not burn, they were sourced from the gravel where they were found, and their natural, grounding shapes lend themselves to the work.

Each subsequent piece in this series will feature stones from a different location, highlighting the diversity of the UK’s geology and the richness that lies beneath our feet, waiting to be discovered.

This particular painting was completed back in April, but I waited to share it until it was framed — the frame plays a crucial role in completing the work. Without it, the piece felt like a black hole, lacking structure. To maintain harmony with my other works, I charred my usual blonde wood frame to complement the painting’s style and aesthetic.

When I look at this piece, it shifts in perception: some days it evokes the sensation of dappled shade filtering through leaves, while on other days it suggests a cosmos scattered with stars, the abstract patterns revealing themselves differently depending on how you engage with it.
