About the Work

I have been working weekly through my Journal de Bord series for several years—an ongoing practice rooted in real-time observation, much like a captain's log. This approach is inspired by the Japanese shichijni ko calendar, where each micro-season lasts only a few days. Nature is constantly changing, and I strive to capture those fleeting moments before they vanish.

This piece is part of my Journal de Bord series, shared with my catalogue subscribers each week. In this entry, I reflect on what I observed in nature, how the piece unfolded, and the specific moment that inspired the work. Below is the journal entry to go alongside this artwork.

Entrée n°41

This week, I wanted to focus on the everyday trees that grow alongside the road — those so often overlooked. There is a striking copper beech I pass on my way into town. Standing alone, it possesses a quiet majesty that draws you in — something it might lose if surrounded by the density of a forest.

As I walked home with my cuttings, ready to paint in the studio, the sun broke through and cast the plant’s shadow across the path. That simple moment — light catching form — has long been a quiet source of inspiration in my work.

The photograph of the framed painting shows a beech I painted in late September. I often revisit earlier works to reflect on how I have previously captured a particular tree family and to observe how they shift with the seasons. I am always interested in painting what is directly in front of me, noticing how it differs — month to month, stage to stage.

In this piece, I focused on the softly wobbled edges of the leaves, still tender in their growth. One detail that stood out was the seed heads, clinging to the branches — for now. Give it a week, and I am sure they will be gone.
