About the Work

I have been working weekly through my Journal de Bord series for several years—an ongoing practice rooted in real-time observation, much like a captain's log. This approach is inspired by the Japanese shichijni ko calendar, where each micro-season lasts only a few days. Nature is constantly changing, and I strive to capture those fleeting moments before they vanish.

This piece is part of my Journal de Bord series, shared with my catalogue subscribers each week. In this entry, I reflect on what I observed in nature, how the piece unfolded, and the specific moment that inspired the work. Below is the journal entry to go alongside this artwork.

Tout Quarry, on the Isle of Portland, was once one of the island’s working stone quarries, where Portland Stone was extracted for centuries and used in buildings across Britain, including St Paul’s Cathedral and Buckingham Palace. Today the quarry has been left largely to nature, with the abandoned workings forming a landscape of stone faces, spoil heaps and discarded fragments of Portland Stone.

For this work, I climbed to the top of one of the quarry mounds and worked directly with the shards that were breaking away from the stone around me. Rather than arranging them as a collection, I wanted to suggest their movement across the surface — as though the fragments were continuing to fall and gather as they moved down the side of the mound.

Sticking to 50 × 50 cm board keeps the series coherent, while each work responds to the particular geology and character of the place where it was made.
