About the Work

I have been working weekly through my Journal de Bord series for several years—an ongoing practice rooted in real-time observation, much like a captain's log. This approach is inspired by the Japanese shichijni ko calendar, where each micro-season lasts only a few days. Nature is constantly changing, and I strive to capture those fleeting moments before they vanish.

This piece is part of my Journal de Bord series, shared with my catalogue subscribers each week. In this entry, I reflect on what I observed in nature, how the piece unfolded, and the specific moment that inspired the work. Below is the journal entry to go alongside this artwork.

Entrée n° 65

Living near the canals, I am fortunate to have a beautiful, natural route through the countryside that not only offers a scenic path but also serves as an ongoing source of inspiration. The canals are where I often discover unique elements in nature and the subtle ways nature reflects its condition.

For this week’s painting, I observed a sparse tree canopy, with many leaves missing and twigs intersecting in a chaotic, intricate pattern. After researching when I returned home, I identified it as a Goat Willow. I aimed to capture not just the tree’s physical form, but the experience it was undergoing within its environment. The tree showed signs of rust, a fungal disease that creates a distinctive dusty orange hue, which is more prevalent in the damp, warm conditions that have followed the recent wet weather here in the UK.
