About the Work

I have been working weekly through my Journal de Bord series for several years—an ongoing practice rooted in real-time observation, much like a captain's log. This approach is inspired by the Japanese shichijni ko calendar, where each micro-season lasts only a few days. Nature is constantly changing, and I strive to capture those fleeting moments before they vanish.

This piece is part of my Journal de Bord series, shared with my catalogue subscribers each week. In this entry, I reflect on what I observed in nature, how the piece unfolded, and the specific moment that inspired the work. Below is the journal entry to go alongside this artwork.

Entrée n° 23

I have been mushroom picking with my father for as long as I can remember — a tradition passed down to him from his great-aunt Rosa, whom he visited in Montpezat-de-Quercy. Together, we search for the same varieties he once foraged in France, such as ceps and chanterelles.

We usually explore the forests of the Longleat Estate, an ancient woodland spanning 4,000 acres with very few roads. Here, nature — and the delicate networks of mushroom mycelium — can thrive undisturbed. On this visit, I must have spotted around thirty different varieties, though sadly none were edible. What we lacked in mushrooms, however, we made up for by gathering sweet chestnuts.

Against a backdrop of clear blue skies, the chestnut canopy seemed to glow. Several days of rain beforehand had helped the leaves retain their structure; still strong and supple, they had not yet turned brittle like those carpeting the ground. I chose to work in graphite for this piece, allowing me to focus on the intricate serrations of the leaves and the tiny speckles left behind by insects.

For this artwork, I used paper four times the size of the vintage Hayle sheets in my graphite collection. I wanted a larger surface to explore more of the canopy. The sheet is a thick, handmade paper composed of 100% long-fibred cotton rag — a rare material whose exceptional fibre length gives Khadi rag papers their remarkable strength and durability.
