About the Work

This piece is part of my Moment Before Spring series from 2021.

Lately, I have been exploring the country lanes by bike, using these rides as a way to enter a state of flow and seek moments in nature that inspire me. This body of work focuses on the subtle transition into spring — that delicate instant when buds begin to swell and leaves hint at the forms they will become.

For me, this moment before spring mirrors the atmosphere we are experiencing now, a time of gentle emergence after lockdown. Like trees gradually awakening from winter dormancy, we are easing back into the world at our own pace. And just as some species take longer to leaf, each of us finds our own rhythm in returning.

This work, painted with Sumi ink on two tones of Italian paper, is composed of 20 panels that form one larger piece. The Sumi ink allows me to build areas where the branches feel dense and weighty, while also dabbing away the ink to create texture and movement, capturing the quiet energy and anticipation of this transitional moment.
