Harvest is the moment a year's work is brought in.
This is my first solo exhibition in Bath since 2015, gathering a decade of practice into a single room at the Royal Crescent Hotel: charred stone, sumi ink, graphite and etching, hung together as a crop is brought in from the field. After eleven years away from exhibiting in my hometown, I chose the hotel's events space for its iconic setting, a fitting place for a return.
The title is both a season and an action. The show opened in early autumn, when the landscape I work from turns and ripens. And the work itself is a kind of gathering: stones collected from geologically significant places across the UK and charred with the silhouette of their own footprint; leaves, hedgerows and cobnuts drawn and painted through the seasons in the woods and orchards around Bath.
I designed and curated the exhibition myself, commissioning carpenters to build the structures that hold the work. I also filled the courtyard, so that you walked through the harvest to arrive at the show: sheaves of wheat marked the entrance, with pumpkins and straw displays, setting the tone for a seasonal exhibition about attention, time and the British landscape.
Nearly 300 people came through over the three days it was open. Thank you to everyone who did.
